The Library of Hangzhou Normal University boasts a time-honored cultural heritage and modern facilities, offering abundant learning resources and support for its readers.

 

I. Overview and History

The origin of the Library of Hangzhou Normal University can be traced back to the Library of Zhejiang Official Two‑Level Normal School founded in 1908. In 1978, the Library of Hangzhou Normal College was formally established. From 1999 to 2001, six institutions — Hangzhou Normal College, Hangzhou College of Education, Hangzhou Normal School, Hangzhou Arts and Crafts School, Hangzhou Law School and Hangzhou Medical College merged into one joint institution. Their respective libraries were consolidated into the new Library of Hangzhou Normal College. In 2007, it was renamed the Library of Hangzhou Normal University. 

The library operates at three campuses: Cangqian Campus (main library), Xiasha Campus and Yuhuangshan Campus. Its total building area exceeds 70,000 square metres, with more than 8,600 seats, among which the Cangqian Campus Library provides over 5,800 seats and the Xiasha Campus Library more than 2,800.

 

II. Resources and Services

The Library holds 3.98 million printed books, 1,148 printed periodicals, 162 accessible Chinese and international databases, 4.18 million e‑books and nearly 110,000 e‑journals. Its collection scale ranks among the top university libraries in Zhejiang Province.

The library subscribes to a wide range of core Chinese and international databases, including CNKI, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, Wiley Online Library and Web of Science.

It offers faculty and students services such as circulation service, interlibrary loan service, study spaces, cultural events, reader training, information analysis and intellectual property‑related services.

 

III. Features and Highlights

Adhering to the service tenet of “Readers First, Service for Talent Cultivation”, the library features modern premises and facilities with open and intelligent interior spaces. It is equipped with RFID technology, seat reservation systems, self‑service circulation machines, study rooms and learning commons. It functions as the centre for academic resources, student learning, information services, cultural inheritance and journal publication.

The library gives full play to its role in cultural education. The Cangqian Campus Library has built a distinctive educational matrix of Two Exhibition Halls and One Book Stack: the MA Xulun Historical Materials Exhibition Hall, the SHEN Junru Historical Materials Exhibition Hall, and the HZNU Pioneering Allumni Book Stack which consists of more than 8,000 books and documents by over 60 principals and renowned scholars in the early history of HZNU, including LU Xun, LI Shutong, ZHU Ziqing and YE Shengtao. It serves as a “touchable classroom of HZNU history”.

 

IV. Opening Hours and Admission Guidelines

1. Opening Hours

Reading areas and self‑study rooms (Cangqian and Xiasha Campus ): 7:00‑22:00 daily. Normal opening is maintained in summer vacation; partial opening is available in winter vacation.

2. Admission Guidelines

Visiting scholars/students who wish to access the library should submit an access request in advance (there is no fixed template). The request should include:

  • the names of visitors;
  • the requested access period;
  • the contact person’s information.

Please send the request to Ms. Wang Wei (20021124@hznu.edu.cn) at the library. Once access permission has been activated, visitors may enter and exit the library using a temporary campus card.

Visiting scholars/students are permitted on‑site reading only. They shall abide by all library regulations, keep quiet and take good care of books and periodicals.

Library tours will be organized for IWL participants on the first week of the program.
